Sighthound Redactor Alternative for Occasional Photo Work

September 16, 2026
Insights

Sighthound Redactor is built for agencies. Bodycam footage, interview room video, FOIA requests, audit trails, CJIS-governed workflows. It redacts audio as well as video, tracks subjects across frames, and runs on-premise or air-gapped. If that is your job, it is a serious tool and it is priced like one.

The floor is $2,500 a year for a single desktop seat. The free trial lasts 24 hours and truncates video at two minutes.

If you just have photos, and no procurement cycle, BlindSpot is a browser page at $4.99 for ten images. Here is an honest comparison of where each one wins.

If you just have photos

Redactor starts at $2,500 a year. BlindSpot is $4.99 for ten images.

No purchase order, no desktop install. It runs in a browser, and three images are free.

Why people look for a Redactor alternative

$2,500 a year is the entry, not the enterprise tier. There is no monthly option, no pay-per-file, no small-volume plan. Ten photos and ten thousand photos cost the same. For a newsroom, a small legal practice, or a marketing team with occasional redaction work, that is a hard number to get past finance.

The trial is 24 hours. It is genuinely instant and needs no credit card, which is more than most of this category offers. But one day is not long enough to run it past a real workload, video is capped at two minutes, and you cannot come back next month to try again.

Multi-user means a sales call. Pro is one seat on one desktop. Two people means the Server plan at $3,500 a year plus $500 per additional user, and Server is contact sales.

The API is not self-serve. You email Sighthound for a serial number. There is no sign-up-and-get-a-key path, and the FAQ and developer docs do not fully agree on which plan even qualifies.

It is video-first. Image support is real — images have their own format list and their own API endpoint — but the marketing leads with footage, and the image formats are the older set: JPEG, PNG, BMP and GIF. No HEIC, no WebP, no AVIF. Photos straight off a phone need converting first.

When Redactor is still the right choice

This one is easy to be honest about, because Redactor and BlindSpot are barely competing for the same buyer.

You handle evidence. Redactor gives you a CSV audit trail with timestamps, user activity and SHA-256 file hashes. If you may have to defend the chain of custody, you need that and we do not have it.

You have video or audio. BlindSpot does neither. Redactor does both, including speech scrambling, muting and beeps.

Nothing can leave your network. Redactor installs on-premise and runs air-gapped with offline licence files. BlindSpot is cloud, and the file stays in your History until you delete it.

You are processing at agency scale. Thousands of files through reusable presets. At that volume the annual licence is cheap and per-image credits are absurd. BlindSpot has no batch upload at all today.

You need CJIS, FOIA or a formal compliance posture. That is their home ground, and they have the deployment options and the paperwork to match.

If you are a police department, do not buy BlindSpot. Buy Redactor.

If the deciding factor is offline processing rather than the audit trail, there are cheaper ways to get it. Gallio PRO runs fully air-gapped from €109 a month and handles both stills and video. Facit Identity Cloak is the CCTV-focused option, built around subject access requests, though it will not process a photo.

When BlindSpot is the better fit

You have photos and no budget line. A journalist, a small legal practice, a marketing team, someone publishing listing photos. Three images free, then $4.99 for ten.

You need one job done this afternoon, not a purchase order and a desktop install.

What you need to hide is a tattoo or a logo. Redactor covers documents and screens well, but tattoos and logos are manual regions you draw yourself. BlindSpot detects them automatically, along with faces, plates, people and text.

Your files are HEIC or WebP. No conversion step.

Your need is occasional. Three images this month, none next month. Credits do not expire, and there is nothing recurring to cancel.

FAQ

How much does Sighthound Redactor cost?$2,500 a year for Redactor Pro, one user, desktop. Server starts at $3,500 a year plus $500 per additional user, up to five. Enterprise is custom. There is a free 24-hour hosted trial with video capped at two minutes.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Sighthound Redactor? For photo work, yes — BlindSpot is $4.99 for ten images with no subscription. For video, audio, on-premise deployment or audit logging there is no cheap equivalent, and Redactor is priced roughly in line with its peers.

Can BlindSpot replace Redactor for law enforcement? No. Redactor offers on-premise processing, air-gapped operation and an audit trail with file hashes. BlindSpot has none of those and processes in the cloud. For evidence handling, Redactor is the right tool.

Does BlindSpot redact video? No. Photos only.

Which one detects tattoos?BlindSpot detects tattoos automatically. In Redactor you would draw a custom region over them by hand, the same as for logos.

What does BlindSpot do with the images I upload? The originals and the redacted versions stay in your History so you can come back to them. Nothing is used to train AI models. You can delete any image yourself at any time, and anything you leave alone is deleted automatically three years after you last open it, or when you close your account. If your work has a shorter retention requirement than that, delete as you go, or use an installed tool like Redactor instead.
